 There are certain rarish items which change the appearance of castles and armies.  This slot is where they are used.

 Yes the spade available as an underworld prize is one of the 'look'  items but unless the original poster is level 30 or above he wont see the event.

looks are either won through events or bought with rubies. they can give bonus's to armies (the super commander gives like a 20% bonus on how many troops can go on the front), or they can just change the appearance of a castle. all looks are temporary, and wear off after a specified amount of time, typically 1-2 weeks
