Hey 
I would like too suggest the best commanders for new players to concentrate on building up first of all
1. Melee: Increases the combat strength of Melee fighters, this can be a critical tool, maxed out +90% Melee combat strength.
2. Wall: This reduces enemy wall protection, great for every type of hit. maxed out at -120% wall protection, leaves more space for moat tools/Manlets.
3. Ranged: Increases the combat strength of Ranged fighters, this can be a critical tool, maxed out +90% Ranged combat strength.
4. Speed: Increases travel speed of the army, maxed out at +80%, brilliant for support or when paired with a Ranged commander.
5. Resources looted: Increases the amount of resources looted, critical when you have big army and you need too farm. maxed out at +120%, great when paired with Wall.
6. Find better equipment: Increases the chance of finding better equipment by up too +120%, not really reliable but a nice commander too have nonetheless.

The key here is the equipment tab. All the gear you pick up on attacks and any you make in the alliance smithy or your own smithy is shown here. Each has its own benefits. You can equip all your commanders and castelans from the gear shown using the above post as a guide. There will be a lot of undesired equipment left there. click the smithy button and you can trade 6 regular stuff for 1 random rare unit; six rare for 1 epic.
You can load better gear over existing gear and the old gear will be available for re-use or smithy 6 for 1 upgrade.
checking the equipment tab periodically would be a smart move.
Bug your alliance leader to upgrade the alliance smithy so that you get better stuff on the daily smithy thing.
