I have a riddle, what is dark but can be light, what protects us from ourselves, and of fright, we do not care for it, and yet we would miss it if it were gone, oh how we would miss the little part of lives that without, we would constantly need a bon.

bon stands for bonfire, needed something to rhyme. :)

Do You Know the Answer to this Ancient Riddle?

"The key to life and death is everywhere to be found, but if you do not find it in your own house, you will find it nowhere.

Yet, it is before everyone's eyes; no one can live without it; everyone has used it.

The poor usually possess more of it than the rich; children play with it in the streets.

The meek and uneducated esteem it highly, but the privileged and learned often throw it away.

When rejected, it lies dormant in the bowels of the earth. It is the only thing from which the Philosopher's Stone can be prepared, and without it, no noble metal can ever be created."

What is it?

Friendship? Love?

Not terribly fair to post a riddle that requires specialized knowledge to reason out and whose answer is something most people have never heard of before.  I'M not even sure what First Matter is, beyond its being a term used by alchemists of the Middle Ages.

I've got a brain teaser. There was an old man. He had 17 horses. he was writing his will. In his will, he wrote, "half of the horses go to my eldest son. My second son gets one-third of the amount. and my third son gets one-ninth of the amount. The next day, the old man died. The brothers began to fight on who would get the correct number of horses. Now you can't kill a horse, otherwise nobody gets it. The king came alone on his horse. He gave the brothers his horse and said,"Here, take my horse and solve the problem". They did. How did they solve the problem? How many horses did each brother get?
Oldest Brother gets   9 or 1/2 of 18
Second Brother gets 6 or 1/3 of 18
Third Brother gets   2 or 1/9 of 18
The King Takes his horse back.

9+6+2 = 7
