I know there's a chance this could sink into a non-productive thread of accusations and complaints, so I ask that people use some restraint and limit this thread to the topic at hand: heavy-handedness on threads that simply wander. So here goes:
I would like to know why so many posts and threads are being deleted or closed down by certain moderators.
Why?
I would understand if it was for some of the bullet point reasons listed above. But the general shift in conversations and random comments and jokes are also being restricted? It makes no sense and I'm hoping more than one moderator will offer their perspective (and if possible, make it relevant to a poster like me, not the extreme examples).

- I understand when it's due to spam.

Can you give an example?

I preferred not to give examples because I am not looking to call anyone out. I just want some answers/discussion on something that is already a known issue.Carnifexx (US1) said:Can you give an example?
I will say most of them tend to center around the KoN / MISC threads though. One example is the battle reports thread; I had some posts removed when I was replying to Morentz & Maiden. There was nothing bad in the post, but it was removed along with around 10 others. There's also the thread about 'Mods deleting KoN related threads' or something similar to that, which was closed yesterday because a moderator wanted the topic to be strictly adhered to (though it's difficult not to believe they just wanted an excuse to close the thread so it would no longer show up among the most recent threads commented on). There are other threads as well.
For clarification: I am not one of those who thinks they've been deleting bad KoN threads or posts due to bias. I know better, because I saw how bad most of the posters were on those threads, and how bad some of the actual accusers were. But I'm also seeing it done on threads where nothing bad is happening (and in these cases the threads actually benefit MISC). I like KoN, yet I'm talking about moderator actions that are (lately) negatively affecting MISC's war and/or propaganda posts. When I do that, I know something is definitely off, lol.
But the stuff affected isn't even really KoN or MISC war related, it's just random conversation meanderings. I'm just wondering why the net-nanny stuff. People are going to start avoiding the forums if even the non-detrimental stuff starts being heavily censored.

I would say since there are a large amount of trolls like me. They may be cracking down on them too hard. Remember Popeye made that announcement a while age saying he had been to lax and was cracking down. And while in cases yes it was needed. Temprance has made some clear bad decisions closing and deleting some things.
For your example, I think he deleted my comment saying it was off topic, then I told him I was replying to something already off topic and then he deleted everything. But the point is if that thread Popeye made is relevant. Well maybe they are trying too hard.

I never thought of you as a troll, I'm going to have to watch your posts more closely now!
Yes I remember Popeye's post, but if I recall correctly it was about abusive posts or things detrimental (waves of spam, language, etc.) Not about going after normal posts and discussions.
I'm not sure what their deal is right now, hoping they chime in.

I rarely go to the forums for informative purposes. Normally it is cause I'm bored. I come onto the forums for entertainment. The ones that get derailed or are made purely for the purpose of a joke are typically the ones I enjoy more. People come onto the forums for different reasons. Deleting every post and thread that seems meaningless to one person does rob others of a fun environment. I do appreciate the effort, but feel it has become an excessive practice.
Just an oldie thread that I appreciated and thought of cuz this: https://community.goodgamestudios.com/empire/us/discussion/120731/server-war-banner-thread/p1

I think there he's talking about "naming and shaming" which I would say accusing users of multis ect with the whole donaldo thing. And then the whole w0k thing as well. If them threads were then shut down/closed or whatever then ok.
But now its just getting out of control.

I enjoy fun, slightly off topic threads where people have a sense of humor. The mods went from letting adult content on the forums to deleting jokes or 'by the way' comments.
The BigFarm forums died because of over-moderation. Now they are currently combining all English speaking BigFarm forums in hopes of having one or two active threads.
Moderators are good to have, but they don't have to over-moderate everything.

Nonsense....this place was totally out of control when it came to spam and threads being hijacked. There were and still are numerous community members that seem bored over playing the game. Instead they come in here and comment on every thread regardless of the subject matter.

In my view things were so bad here that it began to effect the game's overall presentation as it relates to marketing. I support the move to clamp down on all the BS that people had to wade thru and endure just to get some basic information or a simple question answered. I personally feel in time the community may well benefit as it might maybe possibly be taken a bit more seriously by the creators, Dev's and CM's of this junk pile of a game.

How would you feel if they removed your post (the one I am quoting) because what you wrote is not about the same content as my original post? That's the issue here. I may not agree with you, I may not even want color commentary or side topics, but I don't want your posts removed because of it. I only want that if you start violating the TOS or creating a log-jam of posts or spam just to drive people away from the thread.
(Yes, I realize this is an extremely nit-picky example, your post has a lot to do with the subject. I'm just making an obviously ridiculous example to get the point across is all)

I suspect that they might possibly be targeting the "posters" and not the posts. To be blunt, serial spammers and people with user names that can not be traced to an in game player might possibly be under siege here. If that is the case I stand by the decision to paint with a broad brush for the time being. Take a look at the forums for games like Eve. Counter-Strike or League of Legends....they are much more polished and full of good content

Sorry Eric, I didn't sneak my edit in before you replied, lol.
I originally thought what you did too, but then noticed my own posts were disappearing as well. Simply because it was a comment having to do with a topic the thread eventually meandered into, not based on any kind of spamming or bad content.

Naming and Shaming: In my opinion, it rather depends on what the player did. If I were called a povo potato, I'd probably just accept it because it's true. If it were a claim they could not prove that I shared my password with my entire alliance, then I'd understand the mods deleting it since it's just gossip. However... If they posted a screenshot of me posting my login info on the alliance notice board, then that post should not be deleted-at least not immediately. It should be immediately forwarded to whoever is in charge of bans, verified to be a real screenshot, and those players should be banned for violating the ToU.
'Spam' is more complex. There's blatant spam. Off topic, out of nowhere, no content, and a diverse group flags it. When I first came here, that was 80% of the posts on here, and not a single thing was done. The players responsible eventually stopped. All good, right? Wrong. They were not stopped by moderator action, they just lost the desire to continue posting or something, from what I heard. The forums are now much clearer of pure, blatant spam.
This new forum (In the few topics I frequent) is mainly comprised of some healthy smack talk, some humorous posts that don't strictly follow the topic, and a few detailed discussions and debates. Usually all 3 on the same thread, which is very entertaining to me. If I don't care to read the smack talk, I just look at the battle reports. If I don't want to read the humor, I skip certain users who have a tendency to post humor. And if I don't have the desire to read 5 paragraph essays (though I'm guilty of writing them from time to time) then I skip the blocks of text. I'm not special-anyone could do that.
Recently, however, there are just a ton of posts getting deleted. Some I understand, but I'd like to pose a question. If it's not getting flagged, if it's following the general trend, and if the original poster and most people on the thread are okay with the meandering direction, why is it deleted? I don't know the full story behind every deletion, but I've seen a lot of entertaining posts deleted because the "Topic is wandering." That seems inadequate.
Who cares if it wanders? Believe it or not, I went to preschool. They gave us coloring sheets and tried to get us to color in the lines. But you could make much cooler pictures if you drew your own stuff on the back. Lines and rules are good, but not for every situation.
This post got long, and I'm still not sure if I've really made any sense. Sorry about that.
P.S. I don't know who the mod is that's been working so actively, but I honestly think you should apply to work at GGS if you don't already. If they had you monitoring the server for multi account activity, I think it would be a much better game.
Basically, I think the forums should lighten up and the game should crack down...unfortunately, the exact opposite of what's happening.

I would imagine something more of a meeting place where everyone has their views and opinions as well as questions, answers and jokes.
I think there could be more thoughtful posts, especially in more serious threads, but I think it can also be a place for a lot of fun.
If you want to clean the forum and the more serious discussions, there are better ways to do that then deleting posts and whole threads.
My two cents.
