As player and cooperative founder/leader, I find this update to be misguided. Already three players in our cooperative have decided to stop playing this game in favor of your competitor FarmVille. The option to allow players to dramatically increase production by spending hundreds of real life dollars in gold wipes out the possibility of fair mission competitions. Is the next planned step going to be eliminating the game dollars option for buying land? You have the opportunity to save this by offering a slower but possible route for players who cannot afford the gold. We are all waiting to see if you have a commitment to the Big Farm game experience and its community that goes beyond your short term bottom line concerns.

Its a bit difficult to ignore something that is so large, that takes up so much space, and there is no way to not look at it. At least the previous staff method was discreet. The library yells out the difference between the haves and the have nots. Its placement next to the useless mine is just the perfect joke.

I completely agree with all the ones who say what a rip off this new "option" bring to the game. There is no longer an ability to fairly do missions when some people will be simply "paying off" the judge with bribes. I realize Good Game is all about money, but I believe it will see a loss in revenue as many good strong gold players move over to FaceBook farm game where they can play, interact with other peoples farm to benefit themselves as well as their neighbors and need to pay very little if any real life cash to function and enjoy. So disappointed.

This update is a joke, and I feel like GGS is focusing on more ways to taunt us with using and buying gold instead of making the game fun. Why don't you take all this hard work and focus on the 4th farm you've been showing for MONTHS now? I'm mad, honestly. Every week I get all excited for the new update, today I stayed up waiting for it (it is 4:45am). I should have read more on it and known that it was gold only, but I wanted to be surprised. Who in their right might would pay 450 gold for 3 more extra corn every time they harvest? So disappointed.
I suppose every update is suppose to wow and inspire awe every single time? And you mention that every week you get excited about the new update. Am I to understand that the previous updates over the past several weeks have failed to ignite nothing more then bitter disappointment? Then why on earth do you keep playing? However, if the doghouse and new upgrade levels, the various new events have all serve to please you then the developers have indeed made the game more fun after all. Just because an update here and there isn't all diamonds and glitter shouldn't mean that the quality of the game is lessened. And if they choose to introduce something that promotes gold purchase then so be it. This might come as a shock to you but developing games COSTS money and lots of it!
I continue to be baffled by the sheer number of people who are offended by a game, that is free to play, can continued to be played successfully for free but does offer specialty items and benefits at a real price cost. And these extras, mind you do not affect your continued gaming. Not to mention, the players who are wiling to buy are in fact, very essential in keeping this game available to play. Sure you may not get the top of the line decos and will have to exercise a good deal of patience but the game is fully playable without. And even for those who do use gold, such as yourself there will be different reasons for different players to buy and spend gold. Just because the devs have offered an update that doesn't match your specific idea of fun, doesn't mean it will be the same for other players. And I wouldn't be a bit surprised if players using this feature are plentiful.
And this feeling that "GGS is focusing on more ways to taunt us with using and buying gold instead of making the game fun"? Just sounds incredibly foolish to me because if a game is not fun, there would be no players and I am not seeing a widespread abandonment of Big Farm. Instead it keeps bring in new players all the time. As for taunting, please! Taunting is an action in which something is kept just out of reach, usually in order to force a desired reaction. If GGS were to allow players only a certain amount of advancement before the game came to a halt, requiring a gold purchase or membership to be able to continue, perhaps taunt might be accurate. But that is just not the case here.
It is very simple. It costs millions of dollars to provide this "free to play" game. However, Big Farm has it's share of players who like to purchase and spend gold which is a very good thing because spending millions developing versus free to play doesn't exactly balance out. And any game developing company would be a fool not to provide these players with different, interesting and useful ways to spend their in game currency. It is quite necessary for the devs to offer features that will generates sales, thus earning an income to ensure the continuation of this much enjoyed game, which would otherwise fade away into nothingness as a result of bankruptcy!
Maybe you could discuss a feature that was fun for you. Instead of talking down something that is standard, for every single last business, of any kind, anywhere. Encouraging the sale of their product. And I would think it obvious that there is enough clientele to make it worth GGS time to develop this update.

I personally don't know why people are upset, you had to buy staff with gold anyways. I mean you don't have use the library just like didn't have to use the staff.

What is unreasonable is thinking that a game developing company should put in a multitude of hours of their time, hard work and dedication into an ever changing, worldwide online game and not get rightfully paid for what they provide. So how about you get off all this "trying to get money from us" stuff, and explain why you are playing this "so-called" game that you deem not reasonable! "find another way to make your money"? Seriously? That would be like expecting movie actors to act in a movie without viewers paying to watch it, and then those actors work in customer service to make money. Maybe I'm wrong but that just sounds like blatant ignorance....

I would NEVER have bought gold for staff that would leave after 5 days. The books cost half as much and don't expire. AND they can be upgraded too. This is an update that does cost gold, but low enough that I think i can almost afford it.

It continually amazes me that people always call GGS greedy because they offer opportunities for gold buyers. It's the purchase of gold that keeps this game running for everyone, even those that can't or won't buy gold themselves.
I've said this before, but I think it's worth repeating... the reality is, GGS gives out more free gold than I've known any other game to do. We get free gold every 4th (and often 5th) log in of the 5 day cycle. We're also given gold every time we level up, along with gold rewards for some quests. Add to that the opportunity to earn 2000 gold free by simply upgrading your gold mine (with farm dollars no less) and the opportunity to win a gold mining license for another free 2000 gold in Monty's wheel.
Speaking of the Wheel of Fortune, everyone has the opportunity to participate in that regardless of if you buy gold or not as we're all given a token every visit and if you're lucky, you can find another one working your farm. Save your tokens up and you can get the bonus spin where you not only get the chance to win the gold mining license, but limited edition seeds and decorations.
Then there's the Theme Events which gives everyone the chance to earn decorations that have a higher happiness value to them than the most expensive gold decoration has.
Personally, I'm very thankful for all that we have and while a lot of you aren't happy about this, you still have the option of not purchasing the books if you don't wish - it's not going to stunt your game at all.
Please keep in mind, this concept was already built into the game from day one in the form of Staff for hire. The only difference now is that it has a different presentation - and hopefully none of the bugs that the previous Staff had.
Just because you may think that way, doesn't mean that it is the case for everyone and it's not a good idea to be sitting in judgment of others for their way of running their farms.
Short, I applaud your initial post - well said.

I've set up my farm in a way that works for me, just as you've done for yourself and everyone else here has done and I find it interesting that you would consider the use of gold on the farm to be outside the boundaries of fair play.OK! For those who obviously doesn't understand what the fair play is! I buy gold regularly becaause I appreciate the work of the programers. But, I won't to have an advantage over other players just because I have more cash! Therefore I use it mainly for researches and tasks and very rarely to treat myself. To help others is more important to me!

Malik-the base level is not super expensive and will not go away after less than a week! I am working on thinking of something special to make for dessert so I can ask Jeff for the credit card. I am not going to push too hard--we had a lot of dr bill this past month. Even the free gold from the game--i can save it up in a few weeks and get enough to buy one that way.

I never used the workers when they were around, cause in honest for me they were a waste of the few gold I allow myself to buy each month. And I can say the same regarding to this update. Not going to spend gold to get a production boost.
That being said I dont have any animosity towards this update, cause its a choise each player have to make. Spend gold and get a slight boost or not. For those who play to "win" its probably a must have, but my approach is to develope my farm and maximize it by seeing how much I can fit into each type of farm.
I do have a suggestion though:
I will use the apples as an example. In addition to gold there should be another way to get books. Instead of gold it will cost both apples and dollars. Lets say for example that increase from level 1 to 2 is 6 times the amount from 0 to 1 in gold, then GGS could do a 12 times increase in apples and dollars. Allways double the factor compared to gold:
level 0-1 in gold is 500
level 1-2 in gold is 3000 thats a factor 6 increase
level 0-1 in dollars 500k, apples 30k
level 1-2 in dollars 6mill, apples 360k thats a factor 12 increase
I bet this will not lessen the gold using on this feature because of the redicoulus amount it would require on later books, but by doing this most non-gold users wouldnt feel left out and in honest would have something to strive for.
Just my 2 cents of thoughts

it makes playing the game no more fun. the whole idea is just spend gold and u can be up at level 50 in 3 4 days
goodgame studios wants to lose its regular farmers.
THIS IS A USELESS UPDATE AND IS AGAINST THE SPIRIT OF THE GAME OF WORKING HARD
REMOVE IT
Believe it or not, for players who like the idea of spending gold and leveling up fast, it is not useless at all. And for those who have no use for it...guess what? Useless it may be but it doesn't interfere with game play in the least, easy to disregard, doesn't cause any harm...yeah, I fail to see how this feature, which is clearly a matter of personal choice is going to lose regular farmers and more so I wonder just how it "is against the spirit of the game of working hard". It is not a wide gap between developing a little virtual farm at a normal rate and developing a little virtual farm at a speedy rate with the use of gold. Both are happening on a computer screen with a mouse at hand. Only difference is one get's done quicker then the other. If you have no use for it, forget it!

It's a shame that this ideology isn't applied to everyday real life. Seems like it would be a more beneficial thing to argue for instead of picking on a little virtual game.... Intelligence is knowing that life isn't fair.

I disagree with you on that point, Kat Nip. It will stunt the missioning again, the same as the Blue Barns of Death stunt them: Sell missions are stunted by people with Blue barns... now these books will stunt Collect missions in a similar fashion.

I guess it's too late now but it would have been nice if we had at least be able to buy the first level or two with game money and THEN the higher levels would cost gold. That way those players who can't afford to spend lots of real money on the game could have at least gotten a little something out of the library.

That's not the issue, Short. It makes missions between golders and non-golders even more unbalanced. Yes, I'm a golder... Yes, I've bought about 7K gold worth of books, because I'm only human after all and don't want to get left in the dust.
