Topic: [80760] Defeating a barbarian fortress

[-80760] lordsaruman (US1) [US1] :: Nov. 27, 2012, 5:11 p.m.
This is a brief guide on how to take out a Barbarian fortress. Barbarian fortresses are large castles that can be found throughout ice kingdom. They are universal so if someone defeats it, the other players have to wait a certain time before they can attack it again. Barbarian fortresses require a lot of effort, a lot of troops, and a lot of tools. But with some strategic military planning, a barbarian fortress can become less of a challenge to take down. And after all the hard work, there is a big reward in the end (I'll add an attachment later).

First you must scout the castle. This can be done by performing a military espionage.

Because all fortresses are universal they have the same number of troops at each one.

I've attached a spy report to show for it. The total troop count is 96 troops.Attachment not found.

Now that you have a spy report you need to make preparations. The minimum number of troops that I would recommend would be 200-250 if you have heavy troops. But if you have the basic troops (ie maceman, crossbowman) you will have to double the number to 400-450. The more troops you can send the better. Any less and the chances of you suceeding drop significantly.

Once you have the men you need to have tools. Personally I would recommend having a minimum of 40-50 tools. They can be anything from scaling ladders to castle iron mantlets.

Now that you have everything, you need to plan the attack. This isn't too much of a challenge. There are two options you can use. You can send the melee attackers in the first wave followed by the ranged soldiers, or you can mix them up. Either way works good. But where should you attack? Very simple, The front and the left flank. The front and the left flank are not very well defended so it will be a breeze to take them out. AVOID HITTING THE RIGHT FLANK AS IT IS WELL DEFENDED AND YOU WILL LOSE TROOPS.

After attacking a barbarian fortress, if you did everything right you should have a limited loss of troops. Something like this below. Good Luck!!

Credits go to TL II for showing me how to do this.

At the request of some forum members I showed them how I actually did this. It's not the best video and not my best planning strategy but it will do nicely for this. Enjoy!!

*The best strategy is doing all of above but with 100% heavy melee units (V. Mace, Two handed sword, K. kingsguard)

I'll try that, I just attack them with both.

I added that in, but I think I'll test that for myself.

EDIT: Accidentally hit the delete button losing half of the information, that has been fixed.

I dont get it I'm about to send my first attack on a barbarian fortress. I currently have 80 two-handed and 80 heavy crossbowman but is that enough? also i can only send 1 tool at the flanks and 2 at the front that means the barbarians will always have 1 defense at the first wave. So should like first weaken the walls and gate protection to 0% on the first wave and then on the next wave i should deal with the fire arrows. Also the fortress have 3 stonethrowing tools in the front does that mean i have to send wall tools in all 3 waves to weaken that or should i use the shields to weaken the ranged defenders as much as possible.

Please answer to this :D

If this was me when attacking with so few men i would send just 1 maceman on the left and 1 in the middle in the first 3 waves then my attackers in the last wave to clear the tools and minimise your casualties.

The problem and challenging part with barbarian fortress is that you can only send a maximum of 20-40 units per wave or something like that. Saving all attacking units for the last wave wont work since its only 20-40 units and barbarians have a slightly better defense then 2-handed and HCBs.

And if it would succed you still must fight in the courtyard and there will be only a few units there.

They hit one after another, I havent hit a fortress with two hundred men on the dot, I usually stay above 220 or 240 for most as the more troops you have the less casualties there will be. However those casualties depend on how you attack.

@DanceRuler: As I stated in the guide, you will lose a lot of troops regardless, the fewest you can lose is 60 while the most is, well... all of them if your not careful. Do you have a copy of the battle report?

i am yet to attack, will share it asap.

tell me if I use 2 waves, then I will just be hitting with 125 soliders per wave, then the losses would be a lot??

i can't hit 250 soldiers in one go?

Please post a battle report or make a link to a video or something so we others can see how you did it and therefore become better at defeating fortresses (Barbarian, Desert, Dragon)

Enjoy GoodGame Empire! :D

Apologies for the bump but I'm not in desert kingdom yet, so I won't post a guide on that anytime soon. The reason you have fewer losses is probably because you fought armed citizens which are pretty much good for nothings in defense. This is a guide on barbarian fortresses, not desert fortresses.
