The soldiers ran, screaming like small children as the oppressive might of the ghost pirates tore through the city, they burned, raided and plundered, destroying everything in their paths, they slaughtered women and children, even taking a few alive to tie to the front of their ship, a symbol of terror for the world. A nearby house erupted into flames, the ghosts kicking down the doors. Black smoke rose from the city, The captain of the guard watched in horror as his city was burned to the ground, people of all gendered and ages fled in terror, but few escaped the wrath of the deadly pirates.
The captain lead his soldiers own the extensive corridors of the palace, struggling to drone out the screams of terror and the wails of grief from outside. The queen rounded a corner in front of them, sprinting down the halls, she ran straight for them. The soldiers, guessing her intent, braced themselves, catching and restraining her as she tried to break free, "Let me go!" she screeched, kicking one of the soldiers in the face.
"Mistress, you will be murdered." reasoned the captain.
"I must be with my people!"
"It's too dangerous!" yelled the captain, "You must come with us, the easy way, or the hard way."
The mistress staggered, and fell to the floor weeping.
"Common, we've gotta go." they tugged her up, practically dragging her out of the palace, they fled the city, exiting the south gate, leaving behind the sounds of terror and destruction. Behind them, dark plumes of black smoke billowed into the air.

A young boy cried, his mother blocking the entryway to the home, "Run Peter!" she pleaded.
"Mommy, I can't!" wept the boy.
"Honey, you must, you will bear the family name, take your sister, and ride to safety, wherever that may be."
The boy sniveled, "Yes mommy."
"Now go!" the boy turned, taking his three year old sister with him, fled the house, leaving the sounds of their dying mother behind. The home next to them exploded, and a skeletal face appeared among the flames, the children screamed, tuning to sprint in the other direction. "C'mon Molly, we've gotta go!" cried Peter.
Molly wiped the snot from his wet face,  "I know."
mother running with her babe suddenly appeared, sprinting across the street. The babe screamed, for some reason, this scream stood out from the others, perhaps because the others were cause of death and loss and this one was of confusion and desperation. Peter nudged Molly back against the wall so that they were hidden by several crates, Peter peaked from his hiding spot, unable to take his eyes off of the fleeing mother. A knife flew through the air, striking the mother in the back, blood sprayed from her back, painting a nearby wall the color scarlet. She collapsed, pinning the babe beneath her, the child wailed, and one of the ghost pirates appeared, his form flickering between skeleton and translucent ghost. The pirate wielded an epee, which he swung back and forth as a pendulum. He approached the wailing babe, silent as death, the pirate plunged the blade through the corpse of the mother, though her breast, impaling the babe, the pirate hung the impaled babe by a flag pole, bestowing it as a symbol of death to the city. Their blood ran through the streets, wetting the soles of Peter and his sister. Molly started to cry.
"No, no, no," whispered Peter, "shhh, sshh, ssshhhh." too late. The pirate turned it's empty, soulless gaze on their hiding spot, it suddenly took off at a sprint, advancing on the two children mercilessly, Peter sprinted away, forced to abandon his sister to her fate. The shriek of a little girl echoed through the alleyway. Peter didn't stop running, not for the burning building, not for the dead bodies, or the helpless souls, or even for the occasional pirate menace. He didn't stop running until he was though the gate, and in the forest before he paused to catch his breath, the screams of death soon caught up to him though, and he kept on running through the foliage.

Peter collapsed onto the soft earth, his feet hurt, his throat ached, and his muscles cramped. The dusk of darkness was upon him, and the screams of horror no longer found him here. Peter sighed, the grass was soft and beckoning. The sun sank below the horizon, leaving only a few lingering halos, and the first, and brightest star of that knight appeared in the sky. I wish this were over. thought Peter, and his heavy eyes closed, and he fall into sleep n the soft bed of grass.

The skeletal pirates left the charred city behind them, they had a duty, and, since they were immortal, they would never stop until that duty was fulfilled, then, they're spirits would finally be allowed to depart from their bodies. The pirates marched through the forests, passing through the undergrowth as they went. A purple glow illuminated their skeletal frames, their empty eye sockets stared soullessly into the forest. Creatures fled the marching pirates as though they were a wildfire, caw's of alarm were sent up, mice skittered into the undergrowth, and deer bounced flamboyantly away, trying to maintain their gracefulness while simultaneously running for their lives. The trees themselves seemed to shudder and groan as the ghosts past them by. The forest shuddered, shivering as though a terrible wind were winding it's way among the trees.

Agape they heard me call:

And all at once their breath drew in,
