Far too much. I don't know the exact figures but in Everwinter Glacier, you can pay about 5000 of each resource, or about 5000 rubies (from memory).

Thank you for the advice! I never seem to have a lot of rubies. I don't spend them much, but I just don't seem to have many ever.

When you first start out, would it be a good idea to wait until the 6-day shield from other players has run out or should you just attack?

Well I personally attacked when my safety wasn't still up and I got along fine. I guess no one really wants to attack a newbie. But I'm sure the same can't be said for everyone. When you first start out, would it be a good idea to wait until the 6-day shield from other players has run out or should you just attack?

It really dosent matter as long as you don't attack anyone that you can't handle. There's no point in attacking newbies anyway so you should be safe.

This is really helpful advice. I've been struggling with low production of food and needing more soldiers and bakeries aren't that expensive at first. Also, was it a abad idea to spend rubies on an extra work slot because it won't even let me build to things simultaniously.
Great advice though.

I actually am not a ruby buyer but I accidentally bought the construction slot because I had saved up a bunch of in-game rubies (at that time I had 1000). I am level 20 right now and so the buildings usually take an hour or more to build, so it helped me because I didn't need to get back on after I built each thing to get the next building started. This is really helpful advice. Personally I think it's a waste because its not permanent and as you said they don't build at the same time. This is really helpful advice. This is my advice to newbies. If you do not plan on buying rubies or very little this is how you should use your rubies:
This how NOT to spend your rubies:
First off just because you get 300 rubies as a gift dose not mean that you should use them to complete buildings. Let them finish on their own.
Secondly while town houses may look and sound good don't spend rubies on them. Third don't buy ruby siege or defense tools, because while they are better than regular tools if you have a good defense it shouldn't matter that much.
Fourth don't use rubies to repair damage made to your castle, while it will take longer, resources do the job fine.
Fifth when first introduced watchtowers were great, however with the recent addition of commander and castellen items they are now obsolete as some items can greatly increase the time it takes to detect incoming attacks.
Sixth- Events. With the exception of shadow mercenaries all events should be possible to accomplish without rubies. If you are active enough it is indeed possible to collect all the necessary items for each particular event be it the traveling knights or the alchemist. Remember these things will come around again so don't panic if you don't get them the first time.
Seventh, firehouses are pointless fires have long been out out just fine with resources before they came along and resources still do the job just fine.
Eighth- For the new resources in ice, sands and fire there is a new building similar to the stonemason, woodcutter and flour mill. It has the same effect but after the first level it costs rubies to upgrade. I advise against this as if you are patient enough you will have enough charcoal, olive oil and glass to purchase what you need from the villages.
You SHOULD save your rubies for:
Bakeries, they reduce the amount of food your soldiers eat and therefor mean you can make more.
Stables, they considerably speed up the speed of your soliders when attacking. Unlocking kingdoms, while the stone, wood and food should be easy to unlock if you want to save a lot of time and gold use them for unlocking gold instead of actual gold.
Drill grounds speed up the recruitment time of your soliders making for bigger armies in shorter amount of time. Feasts, research and good public order also contribute to the recruitment speed if soldiers, so DGs aren't that important.
Lastly Open gates, while they do save you from losing battles that you have no hope of winning and no damage is done to your troops or buildings.*With the latest update only use when absolutely necessary unless you want all you honor and glory to disappear.
This is my advice if you have anything else to add feel free to comment!
Ruby tools can be useful, and they are not too expensive. If you are dedicated, you get 70 rubies a week if you log in everyday. Arrow slits are really good defense, FYI

You are not allowed to have multiple accounts on the same server, otherwise you will be banned.
To expand a little bit on what Nyanthan said:
There are many worlds/servers in this game. For those of you who don't know what that means, it means that there are identical versions of the game, but with different players on each version. The servers might use a different language to one another, and the players are different on that server, but there are no other differences between two servers.
You are allowed one account PER SERVER. That means that you can only have one account on every "world" in the game. If you had two on the same server, that would give you a major unfair advantage over players who play fairly, because the two accounts could interact with each other and take advantage of certain rules.
However, you can have multiple accounts in DIFFERENT SERVERS, as long as you have no more than one account on a single server. This means you can start again from level 1 on a different server, play the game again and have (theoretically) twice the fun. This is perfectly within the rules.
Lots of players have multiple accounts - maybe even your alliance members or closest friends. They are BREAKING THE RULES. Don't listen to them if they try and get you to use their accounts or multiple ones on the same server, because if GGS finds out, you will be banned.
